Biography

John Henry “Bonzo” Bonham was an English musician famous as the drummer of the English rock group Led Zeppelin.

Admired due to his power, strength, and speed, his single-footed kick drumming that is distinctive in its sound, and his sense of the groove, he’s considered one of the most influential and legendary rock drummers of all time.

The majority of his childhood was within Birmingham, England, and he quit school at the age of teens, around 1964. He also briefly was employed by the construction company of his brother. 

He was a member of his first group, Terry Web and the Spiders, from 1964 later, he toured in various bands, mainly located in Birmingham, as well as those from the Blue Stars and the Senators, which, in turn, enjoyed some success through the single “She’s a Mod.” 

Bonham was a talented drummer and was gaining a reputation in the Midlands as one of the most raucous drummers in music. 

By the middle of the 1960s, the drummer had created his band, A Way of Life, along with Bassist Dave Pegg, later an important part in Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull. 

After a couple of months, the group disbanded. However, Bonham quit the band. The group continued to exist without Bonham for a while. 

Finally, however, Bonham joined a blued-based group known as The Crawling King Snakes. The group included a singer who was named Robert Plant. Bonham and Plant became close friends, and Plant was an avid admirer of Bonham’s music.

The Zeppelin tour manager and bass player John Paul Jones went to get him up the following day they found that he’d passed away in the middle of the dark. An inquest found that Bonham died from vomiting while drinking “about 40 cups” of vodka over 12 hours.

John “Henry” Bonham was the reason I started playing drums, between him and Mr. Buddy Rich who I also considered one of the greatest drummers to ever pick up a set of sticks were the entire reason I wanted to be a drummer. Of course there were many amazing drummers I later found once I really got into the drums Carl Palmer, Carmine & Vinny Appice, Ginger Baker, Frank Beard, Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford, Alan White, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Stewart Copeland, Steve Gadd, Omar Hakim, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini, Nick Mason, Jo Jo Mayer, Ray Luzier, Buddy Miles, Mike Portnoy, Mitch Mitchell, Bill Ward, Bernard Purdy, and the list goes on and on. These are just some off the top of my head and I hope I got the spelling right. All of them Amazing and Influential Drummers to the world of drumming.
